Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug 5'3"x9'10" Sparkling Example Decorative and Collectable
Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug 5'3"x9'10" Sparkling Example Decorative and Collectable
Rug No. 78618
Antique Caucasian Shirvan rug with a sparkling rendition of a well documented design in late 19th century to early 20th century examples from either Shemekha or Arjiman Azerbaijan. Tribal symbols and motifs fill the field around a column of six facetted diamonds resulting in a lovely shimmering effect. The madder red serrated “gubpa” motifs at each end are thought to symbolize the sun or fire. Time softened tones of teal, azure, royal blue, pale yellow, pale orange, madder red, navy blue, charcoal, and cream, are arranged in harmonic perfection. Additionally, the hijri (lunar Islamic calendar) date of 1321 and 1331 are woven into the rug several times, which translates into our Gregorian calendar year of 1914. A desirable example of classic Shirvan weaving that can be enjoyed as both decorative and collectable.
